Mumbai: Shiv Sena on Saturday stirred a fresh controversy as it called for revoking voting rights of Muslims. The article written by Sena leader Sanjay Raut in party's mouthpiece Saamana said revoking voting rights of Muslims will also ensure the end of votebank politics.

The article said, "Till Muslims are viewed as a vote bank, their community will have no future. To end this horsetrading, Balasaheb had proposed that Muslims' voting rights be revoked, and I feel it is right."

Raut also attacked All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi by calling his party a threat to the nation.

"Owaisi bhai is doing politics of Muslim votes and we don't know if it will benefit him or the community, but it will harm the country," Raut said.

Defending his article, Raut said, "There is an attempt to vitiate the atmosphere by some people. Once voting rights of Muslims are withdrawn their worth will be felt. There is an attempt to exploit the Muslim community for votes. They should be looked at as more than a vote bank."

The Shiv Sena leader also said that earlier the Imam of Jama Masjid had assumed the right to guide Muslim votes, now Owaisi is doing that, and added that it is an "alarm bell" for Muslims.

Meanwhile, a complaint has now been filed against Raut with national commission of minorities.
